A letter from Bishop Provenzano sent on Tuesday, October 24:
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Diocesan convention is just a few weeks away. I look forward to convention every year because it provides us the opportunity as a diocese to worship together, work together, and have fun together. It also provides us the opportunity to give together.
We give together through the United Thank Offering (UTO) ingathering which connects us to our brothers and sisters all over the world by supporting ministries and missions throughout the Anglican Communion. I am very grateful to the many people whose dedication goes to making our diocesan UTO ingathering a success each year. Please see more info below about how to participate.
We also give together at convention by taking up a special offering at the convention Eucharist. As a response to the many natural disasters of the past several weeks, this year’s offering will go to directly support disaster relief efforts.
As a delegation, I ask that you please be prepared to participate in this diocesan-wide fundraiser that will go directly to dioceses where support is needed most. Checks may be written directly to the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island.
I am very pleased to know of several fundraisers that have already taken place or are in the midst of being planned for funds going to Episcopal Relief & Development. This special offering should not interfere with those efforts in any way. Please see this as an additional diocesan-wide effort to support our brothers and sisters in need.
For now, our relief efforts will focus on fundraising. In the future, it is my hope that we will coordinate diocesan-wide mission trips when and where appropriate.
Yours in Christ,
The Rt. Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano
Bishop of Long Island
