A Fund for Children and Youth!
Did you know that Episcopal Charities of Long Island (ECLI) has a fund which is dedicated to children and youth?
The Board of ECLI is announcing a way for children and youth to serve children and youth —and you can help!
They are inviting the participation of all, particularly children and youth, to help support the Canon Joyce Hogg Fund for Children’s and Youth Ministry. When your Sunday School Class or Youth Group does a fundraising activity, why not dedicate all the proceeds to help local children and youth?
The Canon Joyce Hogg Fund was created to serve the children and youth of the diocese. Since its inception, this fund has been able to give grants to Diocesan Youth Ministry (DYM) and fund Camp DeWolfe scholarships. The Fund, having no endowment or other investmenmts, is completely dependent on outside gifts.
Hogg is remembered as a faithful servant of the Diocese of Long Island. She served on the Board of Episcopal Charities of Long Island as a member, treasurer from 1992 - 1997 and vice president until her retirement in 2003. She also served the larger Episcopal Church through her involvement at General Convention and Episcopal Relief and Development.
During the Rev. Mark Clevenger’s time as Executive Director of ECLI, Hogg became ill with cancer. As an exemplary servant of God, she never missed a board meeting and continued her dedicated work until her death on June 2, 2006. To honor her, the Board of Directors established the fund through an initial donation of $5,000 from St. Mary’s Church, Shelter Island, whose rector at the time, the Rev. Dr. Steven Crowson, was secretary of ECLI.
The Board hopes to expand the use of the Joyce Hogg Fund to serve the children and youth of our diocese more fully. Some ways this fund might be used in addition to DYM and Camp DeWolfe is by helping parishes with limited resources fund Vacation Bible Schools, after-school tutoring or mentoring programs, improving Christian formation for youth in the parish, as well as other creative endeavors churches might initiate and establish.
By supporting the Joyce Hogg Fund your children and youth will be a part of serving as Christ in action for the children and youth of this diocese. With your support you can continue to honor a wonderful servant of God’s Church in our diocese and give young people opportunities and experiences to know God’s loving presence in their lives.
