Episcopal Charities of Long Island

Episcopal Charities of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization registered in New York State and governed by a board of directors who are clergy or parishioners within the Diocese of Long Island. Its ministry in the Diocese of Long Island is to raise and disburse funds to support the agencies and programs of the diocese.

The agencies and programs that are funded through ECLI are funded by the charitable donations received from individuals, congregations, businesses, and foundations, as well as income from invested funds.

Because income from invested funds is used to pay for modest administrative costs, 100% of every dollar contributed to ECLI through its appeals is applied to agency and program support.

How can you serve your neighbor?

This spring Episcopal Charities of Long Island has awarded grants to three parish outreach projects:

  • St. Mary’s Church in Hampton Bays – Pre-school Vacation Bible School
  • Church of the Resurrection – Saturday Senior Lunch
  • St. Stephen & St. Martin’s, Brooklyn – Senior Wellness Program

We would like to help you serve your neighbor through the Archdeaconry and Church Based Grants Program.

This program began in 1997 to assist parishes in their local outreach efforts and as the churches find ways to serve their community. Since its inception, it has awarded grants totaling over $600,000 to parish ministries. Many times parishes will identify a need in their neighborhood, but need a little capital to get it started. Episcopal Charities wants to help by investing in your project!

We offer grants for up to three years as seed money for your new outreach initiative or to expand an outreach ministry. The first year, grants are available to fund up to 75% of the cost of the ministry, maximum grant $10,000. Grants are available for up to $4,000 for the second and third years or the ministry, with a cap of funding no more than 60% of the ministry’s budget the second year, and 35% in the third year.

Look around your community! What do you see? In this economic lean time, how can you better serve your neighbor?

St. Stephen and St. Martin’s saw a community of seniors gathering at the church on Thursday mornings. As a way of honoring and serving these men and women who have lived lives of service themselves, the parish community has begun to offer a Senior Wellness Program to provide resources to enhance their spiritual, emotional, and physical well being. This program is for the wider community, to provide food, fellowship, support and education to help these elders live healthier lives.

St. Mary’s in Hampton Bays saw a need for pre-school vacation bible school as an outgrowth of their current nursery school program. This program will reach out into the wider community to parents who need a program for their children outside the regular school year.

We are pleased to award a grant for a second year to Church of the Resurrection, Richmond Hill for their Saturday Senior Lunch. The director of this program said that all of the seniors who come to their program have one common comment to make: they come for the opportunity to socialize and enjoy the home cooked meals served by people who make them feel welcome. Coming together in community and feeding people is what we do as Christians!

If your parish or deanery or archdeaconry has an idea for a ministry and you need a little capital, please call or write for more information. The deadline is June 15 for the Fall 2009 grants. If you would like to be an angel and give a gift to help further fund this grants program we’d love to hear from you, too!
