CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER: MLK Jr. Day of Service
This year's Day of Service has been canceled due to the weekend's snow storm. Conditions are not adequate for work in the cemetery. The project will be rescheduled for the spring.
JAN 20, 2020 - 10 AM TO 12:30 PM
Harbor Road Burying Ground, Cold Spring Harbor
In honor of the life and work of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this year’s MLK Day of Service will address urgent preservation needs at the Harbor Road Burying Ground, a historic long-neglected cemetery used by generations of Cold Spring Harbor’s diverse milling and whaling community and owned by St. John's Episcopal Church.
Two professional archaeologists, Dr. Allison McGovern (Senior Archaeologist, VHB Engineering) and Sarah Kautz (Preservation Director, Preservation Long Island) will work together with volunteers to document the Harbor Road Burying Ground. Volunteers may assist in the following activities: mapping the cemetery, recording graves and grave markers, completing site forms, taking photos, cleaning grave markers, and cutting invasive vines.
This event is co-sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island's Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministries and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cold Spring Harbor. This is part of the ongoing work with the burying ground partners which include the town of Huntington African American Historic Designation Council, the Long Island NAACP, The Town of Huntington Historian, The Oyster Bay Historical Society, Raynham Hall, and Preservation Long Island.
An adult chaperone is required for all youth groups attending. Please dress to work outdoors for several hours (warm coat, boots, gloves, warm hat and pocket/feet warmers). Parking will be at the rectory field at 290 Harbor Road, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724.
The event is limited to 25 participants and online registration is required.
