The Very Reverend Hickman Alexandre serves as Vicar of St. James, Brookhaven, Priest-in-Charge of the Episcopal Campus in Riverhead, and Dean of the Great South Bay Deanery.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, he is the second of four children of Mathieu and Marie, immigrants from Haiti. He was shaped by the rich cultural diversity of all that Brooklyn has to offer, especially the Flatbush and Flatlands neighborhoods. Faith, family, and community life were deeply intertwined in his upbringing. At St. Gabriel’s, Brooklyn, Hickman began exercising leadership at an early age; at nineteen, he was appointed Acolyte Coordinator, overseeing two dozen acolytes, and eventually served as the Parish Administrator. It was within this nurturing and faithful community that the seed of God’s call was planted, cultivated, and ultimately led him to ordination.
Following his studies at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, God’s call led him east to Suffolk County, where he served as Associate Rector and Chaplain to the Day School at St. Peter’s by the Sea in Bay Shore. His entire ordained ministry has been rooted in Suffolk County.
Fr. Alexandre has offered extensive service to the Diocese of Long Island, serving on Diocesan Council; the Trustees of the Estate Belonging to the Diocese; the Board of Managers of Episcopal Health Services; and the Board of Managers of Camp DeWolfe. He currently serves as President of the Standing Committee. The Diocese has elected him six times as a Deputy or Alternate to General Convention, and on three occasions he was chosen to chair the Deputation. His service to the wider Church includes two terms on the Program, Budget, and Funding Committee and one term on its successor body, the Joint Budget Committee of Executive Council. At the 81st General Convention in 2024, he served as Vice-Chair of the Committee to Confirm the Election of the Presiding Bishop.
As a follower of Jesus, he tries to embody to love of Christ to all whom he encounters. His prayer life is rooted in praying the Daily Office, taking prayer walks, and regular days for spiritually renewal. The guidance of his Spiritual Director and regular meetings with group of companions from seminary who gather through the gift of technology for prayer and mutual support further cement him in remaining focused on being a faithful Christian.
Passionate about shared ministry and attentive to the realities faced by smaller faith communities, much of Fr. Alexandre’s ministry has been in two-point ministries. This experience has been the impetus for expanded collaboration across the Great South Bay Deanery, including joint worship, shared educational opportunities, and social gatherings throughout the year, all designed to strengthen the bonds of affection among congregations.
Hickman is married to Pierrette, and together they are the proud parents of two daughters, Lauryn and Eva. As a family, they enjoy all things Mets-related, traveling, Broadway shows, and friendly competition over weekly Duolingo scores. Hickman is also on a personal quest to visit all fifty states (eight to go) and all thirty Major League Baseball stadiums (fourteen to go) in the coming years.
