Bishop Provenzano has officially called the Rev. Canon Pierre Damus, presently rector of St. Bartholomew’s in Brooklyn, to serve as priest, pastor, and teacher for ministry within the Haitian community.
In this expanded role as Canon for Haitian Ministry, Canon Damus will provide pastoral care and oversight for our Haitian congregations, which gather in several sites across the diocese, most notably at St. Luke and St. Matthew in Fort Greene and St. Augustine’s in East Flatbush. Coordinating ministry and expanding the outreach of the Haitian congregations in conjunction with Father Andrew Durbidge and Father Lawrence Womack, Canon Damus will focus on the growing needs of the Haitian population and serve as a resource for our clergy and people across the entire diocese.
Canon Damus has served in the Diocese of Long Island for over twenty-seven years, having been ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Haiti in 1989. His service to the Haitian community of our diocese began in 1998 when he was called to be the assistant at St. Paul’s in Flatbush, with a specific focus on ministry to the Haitian community. In 2001, he was appointed Pastoral Leader of the Brooklyn College Ministry. He later served as assistant at Grace Church, Jamaica, until he was called to serve as rector of St. Bartholomew’s, Brooklyn, in 2005.
Bishop Provenzano said, "The diocese is blessed to have such a dedicated and faithful priest who has provided pastoral, liturgical, and sacramental leadership to the Haitian community. Please keep Canon Damus and his family in your prayers as he continues the good work begun in him so many years ago.”
