By preserving our records, we ensure that the history of the diocese is safeguarded for future generations to learn from, experience, and use to effectively serve and educate the community.

Bishop Portraits

History and Holdings

Our records primarily date back to the 1869 founding of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. We also hold a select group of records that predate this era, from when our parishes were still part of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Today, the archives comprise collections across six main areas: the Bishop’s Office, active and closed parishes, legal records, diocesan publications, and various Episcopal foundations and organizations.

Collection Highlight – Bishop Robert C. Witcher Conference Room

The Rt. Rev. Robert C. Witcher

Dedicated to the Rt. Rev. Robert C. Witcher—sixth Diocesan Bishop of Long Island (1977–1991)—this conference room in the Mercer School of Theology, features a display created by the Department of Archives in the summer of 2025 to honor his service to the diocese and the wider Episcopal Church.

Robert C. Witcher Display Case

On the left side of the room, a display case highlights two major initiatives from Bishop Witcher’s episcopate. The first focuses on his support for the Nehemiah Plan, which constructed 5,000 new low-income homes in a blighted area of Brooklyn in 1982. The second details his efforts during the late 1980s to secure the release of captives held in the Lebanon hostage crisis.

Robert C Witcher Display Case 2

On the right side of the room, a display case features materials from Bishop Witcher’s 1977 consecration as Bishop Coadjutor and subsequent enthronement. The collection includes the vestments he wore for his consecration, photographs, service pamphlets, a signed certificate of election, and his first address to the Convention.

Historical Information on the Bishops of Long Island

Research Request Information

Genealogy Research

For genealogy and personal record requests, we can assist with family history research or provide copies of your own sacramental records. Popular requests include baptismal, confirmation, marriage, and burial certificates. Please note that the archives only hold these sacramental registers if the associated parish has closed; for active parishes, requests should be made directly to the church. If you are requesting your own records, please include a copy of a valid photo ID with your inquiry.

Historical Research

We welcome general historical research inquiries. Our extensive collections cover all past and present parishes within the diocese, allowing us to assist you in discovering parish founding dates, clergy successions, and historical photographs from specific eras.
