This service—built largely upon ancient models—was revived in 1880 by Archbishop Benson for use at Truro Cathedral. It has since become a cherished preparation for Christmas, especially through its use at King’s College, Cambridge, on whose service this one is modeled.
Wherever the service is heard, and however it is adapted, its pattern and strength, as the Very Reverend Eric Milner-White (former Dean of King’s) noted, derives from the lessons rather than the music: “The main theme is the development of the loving purposes of God … seen through the windows and words of the Bible.”
The center of the service is still found by those who “go in heart and mind to Bethlehem” and who consent to follow where the story leads. There they may behold the God who is among us—and worship.
During this service, the choir and congregation will sing all hymns, and the choir will offer the carols. Various members of our parish community will proclaim the readings.
