Objective

The Human Resource Manager is a Senior Staff position that reports directly to the Bishop of the Diocese of Long Island.  It provides support for all institutions and employees throughout the Diocese by educating and implementing benefits and employment regulations. The HR Manager is the key liaison between the Church Pension Fund and the Diocese of Long Island.  This individual is also the key source of information concerning acceptable employment hiring and terminating practices.   The HR Manager works closely with the Director of Finance and the Accounting Team and supervises the Payroll Processor and the Finance Administrator to ensure tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner. 

Nature and Scope

  • Handle all Employment issues with respect, compassion and dignity to ensure that all employees know they are a valued part of the work of the Diocese of Long Island.  Maintain an “Open Door” policy so employees and employers throughout the Diocese have somewhere to turn for information and guidance concerning employment matters.
  • Keep all employment records electronically according to the NYS retention schedule.  This will include, but is not limited to, all employment documents, payroll documents NYS mandated Safe Church certificates and background checks for clergy and lay.
  • Oversee background check process for all lay employees and volunteers throughout the Diocese. 
  • Ensure that all those employed by the Diocese, Cathedral, Camp, Mercer School, Episcopal Ministries and Real Estate are provided with an offer letter, position description and annual Department of Labor wage notice (every January). 
  •  Medical Trust and Church Pension plan administrator, responsible for implementing and communicating yearly benefits and updates, and guarantee that all employee’s benefits are recorded and/or terminated correctly in Church Pensions portal (MAP).
  • Oversee annual enrollment for medical, dental, flexible spending accounts, transportation and parking benefit, health savings accounts and AFLAC normally from October through the end of December.
  • Oversee and assist with annual Diocesan Budget preparation.  Assist finance with promissory notes and work closely with accounting staff to make sure everything is recorded correctly. 
  • Ensure all Bills associated with benefits are processed correctly and in a timely manner by keeping open ongoing communication with the Finance Administrator.
  • Oversee Payroll processing through Paychex for all Churches and Entities. Keep communication lines open between you and the payroll processor to be certain all payrolls are processed accurately.
  • Website updates under Human Resource are always to be kept current.
  • Attend and make presentations at the Annual Finance Seminar and any other gatherings that employment benefits and information is to be shared. 

Essential Requirements: 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Advanced proficiency in Excel, Word and Power Point.
  • Communicate professionally with strict adherence to laws that govern the Episcopal Church, Diocese, Department of Labor and NYS & local jurisdiction
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy and direction
  • Strong initiative and judgment; able to work independently; keep up to date with all employment rules and trends.
  • Professional dress and demeanor when representing the Diocese
  • Sensitivity to ecclesiastical setting and the ability to work with a diverse population
  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources or a related field.

This is a full-time position.  Generally, 9 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday. 

Competitive salary in the range of $95,000 to $105,000, which includes a very rich benefit package.
