In the Episcopal Church, leadership is shared among bishops, clergy, and laypeople. In the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, Diocesan Convention plays a central role in this shared governance, electing members of several bodies that help guide the mission and ministry of the diocese. Other leaders are appointed by the bishop.

Four bodies have particularly important and complementary responsibilities in our diocesan life. Together, they help shape our common mission, steward our resources, provide counsel and oversight, and support those discerning a call to ordained ministry.

Explore each of these bodies below to learn more about its responsibilities and the people who serve.

Diocesan Council

Led by the bishop, the Diocesan Council carries forward the work of the diocese between Conventions, much as a vestry does for a parish. It helps shape the diocesan budget, establish policy, and oversee our shared mission and ministry.

Trustees of the Estate

The Trustees of the Estate, chaired by the bishop, are responsible for holding and stewarding property and invested funds in trust for the diocese and a number of its institutions and congregations.

Standing Committee

The Standing Committee, led by its elected president, serves as the bishop's council of advice. Its responsibilities include certifying candidates for ordination, consenting to the election of bishops and certain parish property matters, and serving as the ecclesiastical authority when there is no bishop.

Diocesan Commission on Ministry

The Commission on Ministry oversees the process of discernment and preparation for ordained ministry, advising the bishop and supporting those exploring a call to holy orders.
