Overview
The Trustees of the Estate Belonging to the Diocese of Long Island hold and protect the property and funds that make our mission possible. While the Diocesan Council decides how we pursue our mission, the Trustees ensure we have the resources to sustain it.
Responsibilities
The Trustees hold the diocese's real property and invested funds in trust. They oversee endowments, steward property held for the diocese, and make sure gifts given by past generations continue to serve the Church as their donors intended. Their work is quiet, careful, and long-term. They think in decades, not budget cycles.
Not one pot of money. It is easy to assume that everything the Trustees manage belongs to the diocese and is available for its budget. It is not. To invest well, the Trustees pool, or commingle, funds belonging to several diocesan institutions and to individual congregations. Each share still belongs to its owner and is held for the purposes it was given. Only a portion of the total is available to the diocese itself.
Membership
The Bishop of Long Island serves as president of the Trustees. The Bishop and Treasurer of the Diocese serve ex officio. Eight additional trustees, representing both clergy and laity, are elected by Diocesan Convention.
