The Diocese of Long Island is engaged in a sacred and hopeful season of discernment as we prepare for the ordination and consecration of our ninth bishop on September 19, 2026. Our commitment is to guide this process with prayer, transparency, integrity, and deep listening—honoring the ministry of our current bishop while preparing to welcome the bishop-elect, and ensuring a smooth, grace-filled path toward ordination.
Introducing the Candidates for Bishop
Each candidate will be presented through clear online profiles that include a biography, ministry background, personal statement, and video introduction. These resources will help the diocese get to know each person’s story and sense of call.
We will host diocesan walkabouts, local meet-and-greets, and online gatherings so people can engage with the candidates in person and virtually. Structured Q&A sessions and listening forums will give congregations a chance to ask questions and share what they hope for in their next bishop.
Supporting the Election and Discernment Process
All congregations will receive timely information about the slate of candidates, walkabouts, and voting procedures. Clear communication will ensure everyone understands how the process works.
We will encourage wide participation in listening sessions and discernment events so that voices from across the diocese help shape this decision.
Honoring the Ministry of Bishop Provenzano
A diocesan farewell event on Saturday May 16, 2026 will celebrate the faithful ministry of our eighth bishop, the Rt. Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano. Congregations will be invited to share reflections, memories, and messages of thanks. We will also coordinate a diocesan Legacy Gift or Purse as a sign of gratitude and provide prayers and resources to help congregations mark this transition with thanksgiving.
Preparing for the Ordination and Consecration
In collaboration with the Presiding Bishop and the Bishop-Elect, we will begin planning the ordination and consecration liturgy for September 19, 2026. This service will be both a sacred moment in the life of the church and a joyful diocesan celebration. We will oversee the liturgical, logistical, and hospitality planning for the ordination and all related events. This includes worship planning, music, procession, seating, accessibility, and coordination of volunteers and guests. Working closely with diocesan staff, host parishes, and ministry teams, we will ensure that every detail is handled with care, so the day is marked by beauty, reverence, and a spirit of welcome for all who attend.
Communicating Throughout the Transition
Throughout the entire transition, we will provide regular updates on the timeline and major milestones. Clear and consistent communication will help the diocese stay informed and confident in the process. Key information, schedules, and resources will be shared through the diocesan website, email, social media, and other communication channels, making it easy for congregations and individuals to stay connected. We will also offer opportunities for the diocese to pray together during this season of discernment. Through shared prayers, reflections, and worship resources, we will ground this transition in faith, trusting in God’s guidance for the future of our diocese.
