“Caring for  Creation” will be the theme of the St. Peter’ By-the-Sea Vacation Bible School (VBS). August 10-14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The week will include activities such as arts & crafts, outdoor exploration, play, singing, gardening, reading the illustrated story of Creation (from the Bible), and  group discussions, among other things.

On Thursday, August 14 at 6 p.m.the children  will share what they learn with a special performance just for their relatives and friends. Pizza, salad and drinks will be provided.

The Reverend Lilo Car Rivera, priest associate, oversees the church’s Family & Youth Ministry and says, "Research has shown that kids today are worried about climate change.

“Each Day we’ll read a part of the creation story and consider its impact on our lives.  The kids will learn about  God’s love for us and creation and understand their own role for caring for creation.

We’ll then follow up with some fun craft activities associated with the reading.”

Of special note is the church's three acre garden; it includes a farm with raised beds where herbs and  vegetables are grown–and then given to the church’s food pantry to help feed the hungry.

Gardening, itself, is a learning tool, incorporating subjects like reading, science and math. The kids will be planting seeds as part of the VBS. St.Peter’s  welcomes them to return in the fall to collect their harvest. Most importantly, however, kids learn life skills, such as planning, patience, nurturing, holistic thinking and environmental awareness.

Healthy treats will be served. The class is free, but registration is required so we know how many kids to expect.  Please call 631-665-0051, Extension 8 or email: priestassociate@stpetersbayshore.org.
