On Thursday, May 29, 2025, the staff of the Diocese of Long Island gathered on the Cathedral Grounds for a meaningful moment in its history: the official dedication of the Newby Carriage House, named in honor of longtime Facilities Director Stuart Newby.
The renaming of the Carriage House was first announced during the 158th Convention of the Diocese of Long Island. At that gathering, the Rt. Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano, Bishop of Long Island, awarded Newby the Bishop’s Cross for Distinguished Service. The new name honors Newby’s more than fifty years of faithful service.
“Stuart Newby has been the heartbeat of our diocesan infrastructure,” Provenzano said during the unveiling ceremony. “He has cared for these buildings as if they were his own home—and in many ways, they were.”
A commemorative plaque was unveiled during the May ceremony, attended by diocesan staff and colleagues who worked alongside Newby for decades. The inscription reads:

For over 50 years, Stuart Newby served as a steward of our historic buildings and sacred treasures. In recognition of his unwavering commitment, this Carriage House is dedicated in honor of the Newby family.
“I’m honored and a little overwhelmed. I’ve always considered it a blessing to care for these sacred places,” said Newby. “To have my name associated with one of them is more than I ever expected.”
The dedication comes ahead of Newby’s retirement this August, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter in the life of the diocese. As Bishop Provenzano noted, “This building will now bear the name of someone who quite literally helped hold it—and all of us—together.”
The Newby Carriage House now stands as a lasting tribute to a faithful steward whose legacy will continue to shelter and support the life of the Church for generations to come.
