The Rev. Dr. Matthew Moore has been appointed College Chaplain at Brooklyn College, expanding the diocese’s commitment to campus ministry, higher education, and community advocacy in the Borough of Brooklyn.

Father Moore, who serves as the Diocese’s Missioner for Environmental Justice and Priest Associate at both Church of the Nativity and Church of the Epiphany and Saint Simon, will provide pastoral support and spiritual accompaniment to students, faculty, and staff across the campus community. He also serves as a professor of philosophy at the college.

Formed for the priesthood at the Mercer School of Theology in Garden City and ordained in 2017, Father Moore holds degrees from the University of California, Berkeley (A.B.) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (Ph.D.). Alongside his academic and parochial duties, he works with the New Sanctuary Coalition advocating for immigrant rights.

“I’m so grateful to President Anderson and to my bishop for giving me the opportunity to serve the students, faculty, and staff of Brooklyn College as College Chaplain,” Father Moore said in message to the college. “There are many valid spiritual paths, and I am here to accompany you on your path, not to try to force you onto my own... My door is wide open to you, no matter who you are, and no matter what you do or don’t believe.”

Brooklyn College President Michelle J. Anderson commended Father Moore for advocating for the establishment of the chaplaincy position, highlighting his commitment to providing an inclusive, safe space for students of all faiths, LGBTQIA+ individuals, immigrants, and those on the margins.

Father Moore resides in Brooklyn with his husband, Tom, with whom he celebrates 46 years of marriage this fall.
