Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
By now, you have seen reports of the severe winter storm expected to impact our region from later today through Sunday and into Monday. The New York City Office of Emergency Management is advising residents to remain at home tomorrow due to potentially hazardous conditions. The storm is forecast to be even more severe in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
In light of this guidance, and out of concern for the safety of our people, I am strongly urging all congregations to cancel in-person liturgies this Sunday. The anticipated conditions present significant risks for travel, particularly for the elderly and those most vulnerable.
Wherever possible, I encourage you to move your services online so that the faithful may continue in prayer and worship from home. Please communicate clearly and promptly with your congregations regarding cancellations and virtual options.
The safety of our communities must be our first priority. Thank you for your leadership, prudence, and pastoral care in this moment.
Know of my prayers for you and for all who may be affected by this storm. Please reach out if you need immediate assistance by calling my office at (516) 248-4800 and pressing #9. Our phones are monitored by a live answering service 24/7 and someone from my office will be in touch as soon as possible.
Prayers and a blessing,

The Right Rev. Lawrence C. Provenzano
Bishop of Long Island
