The Rev. Dr. Adam J. Shoemaker is the Ninth Bishop-elect of the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. Bishop-elect Shoemaker will be ordained and consecrated bishop on Saturday September 19, 2026, at the Tilles Center in Brookville, NY.

Prior to his election, he served as Rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina for nine years. He has also served churches in North Carolina and Massachusetts and was once a missionary to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Bishop-elect Shoemaker is an Egyptian American, born and baptized Adam Haggagi, with Christian, Jewish, and Muslim roots in his family of origin. He is the first person of North African or Arab ethnicity elected bishop in the Episcopal Church. He was raised in Huntington, New York and as a child and teenager attended St. John’s, Huntington where he was confirmed by Bishop Walker. Prior to leaving for college in Boston, he also was a member of Trinity, Northport.

Bishop-elect Shoemaker is married to the Rev. Courtney Davis-Shoemaker, whom he met and married at the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, and together they have three children, Malcolm, Aubrey, and Hannah.

A rabid sports fan, he enjoys cheering on his beloved New York Mets in the spring and summer and also the Egyptian National Football Team and the Liverpool Football Club of the British Premier League.

Bishop-elect Shoemaker speaks advanced Portuguese and basic Spanish. He also enjoys exploring the Arabic language and culture with his large extended family in Cairo and Luxor and especially cultivating ties with his six younger brothers and sisters there.
